Peguero Resigns Over Legal Battle Surrounding Kingsbridge Armory
Office of the Bronx Borough President

Janet Peguero, the Deputy Bronx Borough President, has resigned from her post. Her departure comes as both she and Borough President Vanessa Gibson face a lawsuit alleging corruption tied to the redevelopment contract for the historic Kingsbridge Armory.

According to Borough President Gibson, Peguero's decision is driven by personal reasons. "Although this transition may seem sudden, it has been influenced by her deep love and commitment to her daughter," Gibson stated, indicating Peguero wishes to spend more time with her family.

However, the timing has led some observers to believe the resignation might be connected to the ongoing lawsuit.

Adding another layer to the situation, Peguero is reportedly returning to Constantinople and Vallone Consulting, a lobbying firm where she previously worked. This firm is also linked to the Kingsbridge Armory controversy.

Before joining the Borough President's office, Peguero represented Maddd Equities while at Constantinople and Vallone. Maddd Equities was later awarded the large redevelopment contract for the Armory.

The lawsuit against Peguero and Gibson was filed by one of the unsuccessful bidders for the Armory project. The central claim is that Peguero had a conflict of interest due to her previous work representing the winning bidder and, therefore, should not have been involved in the selection process.

Peguero made history in January 2022, becoming the first Dominican immigrant woman to hold the position of Deputy Borough President for the Bronx under the Gibson administration. Her role involved overseeing significant areas, including Land Use and Community Boards.

Before her appointment, Peguero's career included roles at the NYC Department of Small Business Services and at the Vance Center for International Justice.
